Watch out for salt
The maximum amount of salt children should be having varies by age:
· 4 to 6 years - 3 g a day
· 7 to 10 years - 5 g a day
· 11 year upwards - 6 g a day
There's no need to add salt to your child's food. If you're buying processed foods, even those aimed at children, remember to check the information given.
Child obesity rates have trebled over the past 20 years; 10 per cent of six-year-olds and 17 per cent of 15-year-olds are now considered obese. Last year, a government report predicted that this would rise to 26 per cent of children by 2050. The report also warned of the life-threatening problems of childhood obesity and predicted a 70 per cent rise in type 2 diabetes, a 30 per cent increase in strokes and a 20 per cent increase in heart disease.

Copy Considerations for Get Stuffed!
Statistics To be added / edited to by PCT
1) New research showing the weights and heights of reception children and children in year 6 in Leeds collected by School Nurses show in reception, almost one in four of the children measured was either overweight or obese In year 6, this rate was nearly one in three This information shows Leeds has about the same sized problem as other parts of our region and England - a very big one !
2) Obesity is significantly higher in boys than in girls in both age groups
3) Obesity is significantly higher in year 6 than in reception .
4) The recommended maximum amount of daily salt intake for an adult is 6 grams. The daily amount for a child it is a lot less depending on age. A packet of crisps may contain as much as 3 grams, for many children more than the daily maximum recommendation.
5) Approximately 90% of a hotdog is fat.
6) Up to as much as 12 teaspoons of sugar may be present in a 12 oz. fizzy drink.
7) Just walking can burn up to 175 calories an hour, while swimming, football, hockey, squash and skiing can all burn up around 400 calories an hour. Exercise is even more rewarding if you learn a new skill at the same time.
8) People often mistake thirst for hunger. What you might need is a drink of water.
9) How much do you have to do to work off an average (50 grams) chocolate bar? Running around for 32 minutes, swimming for 20 minutes or playing on a play station game for 1 hour and 45 minutes
What is Obesity and Impact To be added / edited to by PCT
What you eat and do can affect how much you weigh.
If you weigh too much it can affect your heath now and in the future.
The more you weigh the more it can make you feel unhealthy. In the long term this could lead to your heart not working as well as it could and in the short term you may feel tired and moody.
The food you could eat less of have lots of fat and sugar in them.
The food that you can eat lots of are fruit, vegetables and healthy whole grains.
Doing things like playing football, dancing and running around will make you feel good and give you a healthy appetite.

Had a quick look on AA Route Finder and it says that from Leeds central it takes about half an hour to get to the Wetherby school where the workshop is taking place Wednesday morning. I am going to aim to be at the school for around 9am to meet with the relevant school staf and make sure all is set their end before you guys arrive.
The address for the school is
Wetherby Deighton Gates Primary School

Supermarket Sweep!!
Message from Emma Hopkinson:
Friday 15th Feb, 10am the Asda store in Pudsey is allowing us to take the Tracker children there to do a supermarket sweep workshop! Sally Brown our PR officer will be arranging some press coverage i.e. Yorkshire Post, Look North etc. So are you guys able to attend at all? Any of the students are more than welcome to attend – would be a great chance to get some fab photos for the booklet!
I am going to do some product research about the ranges that Asda offer – Sandra showed me the range of food they do for children with exciting packaging and nutritional information on them designed to get children eating healthy: So I thought this range would be good to include somewhere in the dash!

Howdy, just came across this and thought it was worth posting. Maybe the wrong direction for the publication but thought it might inspire something else. Check out the website www.adcouncil.org where theres a whole array of them. J
